The Alchemist

Part 1 Summary
Santiago, the main character, was a normal man who worked as a shepherd. He loved his sheep because they made him travel and experience traditions of different countries. However his parents wanted him to be a priest. But he decided to be a shepherd and follow his dreams. While travelling he met new people. In a country called Tarifa he met a woman, she was the merchant’s daughter, and he fell in love with her. So as we can see he lived an ordinary life. Until one day he dreamed that some children came and played with his sheep. The children informed him about a hidden treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. He had the same dream twice and at the moment when they are about to tell him the exact location he always woke up. Consequently he wanted to know the message from this dream. So he went to a gypsy who told him that he has to go to the pyramids and find this hidden treasure, and when he does so, he has to give her one tenth of it. Later on, he meets Melchizedek, the king of Salem, who advised him to go and follow his personal legend. He was a very wise man. He gave him two stones, these two stones answered his questions, the black meant yes and the white meant no. Santiago sold all his sheep and decided to go to Egypt. On his way he sat on a bar in a country called Tangier. There, he met a boy who spoke Spanish. So he considered this boy as his friend and gave him all his money. But unfortunately, he turns out to be a thief and stole all his money. At the end of the first part we can see Santiago who had neither money nor his sheep.
