Poem

Theme : Love

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height   (Metaphor)
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.    (Allusion)
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.    (Repetition): Love thee
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,—I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!—and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
-       Elizabeth Barrett Browning
The tone in the poem, is peaceful and calm, since the poet is in love so while she is expressing her love it is quite normal to feel very happy, calm and almost euphoric, may be even intense, since she had an affair with Robert Browning whom she later married, against her father’s will.
The message of the poet is to express how much she loves the person she is in love with, trying to show him how many ways she loves him, she is also trying to warm up our hearts by showing us how much she loved him.
